When you are passionate about your writing and you just know you have a great book in mind, then you need to market that concept to a publisher. So many people never get their books published because they will not follow through. Yes, it is true that there is something like a 1:60 chance that a publisher will find your book worthy of publishing, but you cannot let the odds scare you.
You must let your strength of character shines through and you must persevere! Indeed, I have been thinking about this quite a bit. I think you need to take your best book concept and you need to put together a "Book Proposal" and after reading; "Bullet Proof Book Proposals" by Pam Brodowski and "How to Write Book Proposals" by Michael Larsen, it seems that it can be done relatively easy.
In fact, I have created a little "template" for myself for book proposals in a word file, so if you have Microsoft Word 2007 or later, I can email this to you to get started or you can simply create your own. What goes into a book proposal you ask? Let, us take a case study, let's say you want to write a book about how to stay in great shape even with the hectic life of being a soccer mom? Well, basically you need to:
1.) Make a Proposed Title (which will be changed by the publisher later most likely)
2.) Write a Synopsis
3.) Sample Table of Contents
4.) Outline
5.) Include two chapters; first, last or first and a middle chapter
6.) List the potential markets such as;
- Health and Fitness,
- Women's Books,
- Mothers
- Home and Family
- Sports
7.) List potential buyers of the book and secondary markets such;
- High Risk for Diabetes folks,
- AYSO Participants,
- Physical Education Instructors,
- Physical Trainers
You see, it's not too difficult to put together a book proposal, call a publisher, get them to agree to receive a copy of your proposal or find a literary agent that will lend you an ear. But, you must take action otherwise you will someday see that very book you wanted to write on the shelf and say; "Hey that was my idea!" And well, that has just happened way too many times to me. It's time to get serious and get published. So, think on this.
