I am a poet and I am looking for a publisher. Does anyone know of a good & credible publishing house?

I'm 15, and have written a few books. I think they might be good enough to publish, but I need to find a publishing house. I have a feeling that newer publishing houses might work better than older ones, but I just don't know! Is there a way to independently verify book sales by use of the I.S.B.N. number? At present the only source of information available regarding sales figures comes from the publishing house. I would like to verify their figure through an independent third-party, is this possible?

I know when you self publish, you do it yourself. But what about when you send it to a traditional publishing house? Does somebody in that company write up your book description for the back of your book and online stores, or do you still do it?

two years ago I published a novel and it's still available in the biggest bookstores. several friends etc told me during spring / summer they bought the book. but today the publishing house send me a paper stating they have sold no books. if the book wasnt' selling anything it would have been removed from the selves of bookstores, they don't keep a two year old book when fresh books come out every day. i can't believe these random people were all lying when they said they bought it. i mean at least one copy must have been sold. but that's not the story their papers presents. how can I find out if they are cheating?

I was trying to answer one of the many "how do I publish" questions on B&A when I realized that I couldn't come up with a valid reason for using a publishing house without an agent. Why would a writer choose to forgo an agent when dealing with a publishing house? Personally I'm an amateur when it comes to this business and I would want the expertise of an agent by my side.
