Does getting one copy of a manuscript printed in book form from a self publisher count as being published?

I want to get one copy of my manuscript printed from a self publisher in book format to give to someone to read. Does this count as being published? Would I still one day be able to try and sell this manuscript as being "unpublished?" I only want to give it to a friend as a gift to get her opinion, not looking to sell it yet....if ever! :)

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

I personally wouldn't consider it so. Unless the book is in print, meaning making lots of copies, and being sold in bookstores, I wouldn't consider myself published. Also, I would nead it copyrighted.

Answer 2

It doesn't make you published but it won't help your case in getting this particular manuscript published down the road. If you are seeking a chance to be published then get smart and work on doing so through traditional means. Self-publishing is crap...period.

Answer 3

Is it selling or not? There lies your answer. If it is selling copies then it is published. If not then its unpublished manuscript. ;)

Answer 4

Only if you sell it/them to the public successfully.

Answer 5

Nope. "Published" means that the book was accepted and produce through a publishing house. Self-publishing never counts.

Answer 6

Generally, a book is considered published when it is purchased by the general public. Yourself and friends do not constitute the general public.
